Website rankings in the search engines are perhaps the most important part of any website and yet the most understood part of the website by many website owners.

Sponsored links are advertisements that you pay for each month.  They display at the very top of the Google page or on the right hand side.  It is rare for any keyword phrase for even 1% of the people who did the search to click on a sponsored link.  In addition you have to pay for each and every click even if they do not buy. For most businesses sponsored links are a bad idea.  For a few they are sources of additional profits. 

Free Local Listings

Free local listings are a good idea if you have a local brick and mortar establishment and this article will teach you how to get them, and improve your rankings.  However, only up to 5% of all people using Google click on the local listings so it's far more important to show up in the Organic Listings.
